METROPOLITAN ANTHONY (PACKANICH): WHICH INFORMATION CAN WE TRUST?

In difficult times we vividly sensea problem «Which information to trust?» Because everybody understands that a lot of information exists now, created to deceive people from the beginning. So, it’s harder to clear up this bubbling drumly stream.

But now, it seems that the matter of the verity of certain facts is not so important. This answer will probably surprise many. How is that? Is it not important to know what is true and what is not?

Undoubtedly, it isimportant. But the trouble is that right now it is very difficult to distinguish the truth from half-truths, untruths, or even from lies.

Therefore, it is much more important now not to pursue investigations and researchings of some facts (even more, it is not as simple as it seems to many), but to think about how exactly these facts are reflected in our soul.
For Christians is very important to set the priorities properly: what is one for need (Luke 10:42), and what is secondary and tertiary.
For any Christian, the most important thing is the unity with the Lord. It is being realized by a righteous life, the fulfillment of the commandments, love for your neighbor and participation in the Church Sacraments. Sin separates from God.

But sin is not only this or that gross breach of God's law. Sin is also evil emotions that produce anger, hatred, thirst for revenge, etc. Believers experienced such feelings at least once in their lives, and everyone who experienced them surely remembers how difficult it is to return to prayer later, to return to communion with God.

Each of us can quite easily check what kind of sensation in the soul is caused by the information we consume. If it is fear, anger, furore, then the information is not useful to our soul.
But now, someone would raise an objection, most of the news is exactly like that. And even more: we see horrors in our own lives, which, even without any news, produce awe and sorrow in us. What’s to be done here?

Yes, we are weak. But that is why we need to turn to our only Source of strength. “…for my power is made complete in what is feeble,” says the Lord (2 Corinthians 12:9).

And only by this reason we can rely entirely on the Lord. Accept His holy will. Remember that none of our hairs leaves our head without His will. And from the depths of your weakness, your sorrow, all your human imperfection pray and appeal to our only Defender. And before reading any news, do not rush, but pause for a few seconds, mark yourself with a sign of the cross and ask Christ to let you accept what is being read with calmness and humility, with wit and in a Christian way. And this is how any information should be taken.
