To His Beatitude Metropolitan Onuphry – God’s all-powerful help, good health, spiritual joy, peace and love!

Metropolitan of Borispol and Brovary Anthony, congratulated Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onuphry on his 76th birthday. The hierarch published warm words addressed to the Primate on his Facebook page on November 5, 2020.

«On the 76th anniversary of his birth, we prayerfully wish His Blessedness, His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onuphry, God’s omnipotent help in the performance of the Primate ministry, good health, spiritual joy, peace and love. May the All-Gracious Lord always generously endows our Primate and all the believers of our Ukrainian Orthodox Church with mercy and bounty!» – wrote Metropolitan Anthony.

Let us remind you that Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onufry (in the world Orest Vladimirovich Berezovskiy) was born on November 5, 1944 in the family of a priest from the village Korytnoie of Vashkovetsk (Vizhnitsk) district of Chernovtsy region.

After graduating from school, he received a technical education, entered the Chernovtsy University, but after the third year (1969), he left his studies at a secular university and entered the second class of the Moscow Theological Seminary.

As a 26-year-old young man, he joined the fraternity of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Here he was tonsured and ordained. A year later, in 1972, he entered the Moscow Theological Academy. He graduated with a Ph.D. degree in theology.

From 1984 to 1990 he served as prior of the Transfiguration Church of the Athos mission in the village of Lukino, Moscow region, rural dean of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, governor of Pochaev Lavra.

He was consecrated bishop of Chernovtsy and Bukovina at the age of 46. For refusing to sign an appeal to His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II on granting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church the status of autocephaly in 1992, he was transferred by the then Metropolitan of Kiev Filaret (Denisenko) to Ivano-Frankovsk. He returned to the Chernovtsy cathedra in a month and a half. In the 50th year of his life he was elevated to the rank of archbishop, at 56 he became a metropolitan.

On February 24, 2014, due to the serious illness of His Beatitude Metropolitan Vladimir (Sabodan), the 69-year-old Vladyka Onuphry was elected Locum Tenens of the Kiev Metropolitan cathedra. He performed this obedience until August 13, when by secret ballot of the Council of Bishops of the UOC he was elected and named the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

The enthronement of His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Onuphry took place on the Cathedral Square in front of the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra on August 17, 2014.
